Ceramics Classes at Bow House Studio™

**PLEASE READ THIS ANNOUNCEMENT** Bow House Studio has moved to its new location in Bridgton, Maine. We are no longer offering classes in Massachusetts. 

Kids, teens, and adults welcome! Great for a date night, after school activity, or to relax and decompress. Choose from a variety of class types at times that fit your schedule.

General Information


Class Types: 
Beginner wheel throwing, hand building, and sculpture classes offered as single sessions or multi-session packages with flexible times. See below for more information.

**Monthly studio memberships offered for those not needing instruction**

Class Size: Up to 6 people

Class Schedule: There is no pre-set schedule! You can request any day/time you’d like.  There may or may not be other students in your class depending on the time you request.

Plan Ahead: Wear clothes you don’t mind getting messy, and sneakers or boots (please avoid open-toed footwear). There are parking lots on either side of the building. The lot on the right side is located off Bacon Street.  Enter the barn at the back of the building and head up to the second floor. The studio is in suite B3.

Class Policies: 
Advance payment is not required in most cases, and you may pay when you arrive for your class. Accepted forms of payment include credit cards, debit cards, Venmo, cash, and checks.

Please provide 24-hour notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your class.

No-shows are subject to a rebooking fee equal to the cost of their missed class. No-shows looking to reschedule are required to pay in advance for the cost of their newly scheduled class plus their missed class. Without advance payment, the class will not be booked. The studio reserves the right to not reschedule a no-show after their second missed class. 

Beginner Wheel Throwing: 1 session/2 hrs

This one-time class is for students with little to no clay experience who would like to learn the basics of wheel throwing for creating functional work such as mugs, vases, and bowls. The class will include demonstrations on how to prepare clay for the wheel (wedging and weighing), how to attach clay to the wheel head, center clay, open up the form, compress the base, pull the walls, collar the neck, finish the lip, and remove the piece from the wheel. Students will practice the concepts through their own hands-on activity at the wheel. Trimming instruction is not included in this class. All materials and tools are provided for you.

Cost: $60/per person


Please note: Single session classes are not meant to result in you bringing a finished ceramic piece home with you. All clay used during your session will be recycled. If you’d like to save your work and continue with it, subsequent sessions can be booked at a discounted rate.

Beginner Wheel Throwing: 3 sessions/2 hrs each

This multi-session class is for students with little to no clay experience who would like to learn the basics of wheel throwing for creating functional work such as mugs, vases, and bowls. All materials and tools are provided for you. After 3 sessions you will have completed the entire process for creating your ceramic pieces – from wet clay to bisqueware to glazed and finished product that is yours to keep!

Each session will include demonstrations and hands-on activity covering the following:
• Preparing clay through the wedging and weighing process
• Centering clay on the wheel
• Opening centered clay, pulling walls, and shaping a form
• Trimming excess clay and creating foot rings
• Creating attachments (e.g. handles) using the score and slip method
• Maintaining moisture levels and executing controlled drying of clay
• Preparing bisqueware for glazing
• Selecting a glaze based on clay type and texture
• Applying glazes using brushing and dipping methods


Session 1 – Preparing the clay and throwing a form on the wheel
Session 2 – Trimming a form and creating attachments such as handles
Session 3 – Glaze preparation, selection, and application

Cost – $150 total/per person (save $30 by booking 3 sessions vs. 1!) 

After your final session your glazed work will go into the kiln to be fired and can be picked up by you at a prearranged time approximately one week later. If you’d like to participate in additional sessions to continue or finish work, subsequent sessions can be booked at a discounted rate.

Beginner Hand Building: 1 session/2 hrs

This one-time class is for students with little to no clay experience who would like to explore the basics of hand building for creating functional work such as plates, vases, bowls, and mugs. The class will start with brief demonstrations of pinching, coiling, and slab building techniques. The student(s) will select which method(s) they are interested in pursuing for the remainder of the class. Instruction will be given on preparing clay for use, creating surface texture, finishing edges, and adding attachments such as feet, handles, and decorative elements. All materials and tools are provided for you.

Cost: $60/per person

This one-time class is for students with little to no clay experience who would like to learn the basic techniques for creating ceramic sculpture. Brief demonstrations will be given for how to sculpt using coiling, pinching, slab building, and solid construction methods. Students will follow along through their own hands-on act of sculpting. The use of tools to shape and decorate sculpture will be reviewed, as well as consideration for clay thickness, gravitational balance, and how to treat closed forms. All materials and tools are provided for you.

Cost: $60/per person

After 3 sessions you will have completed the entire process for creating your ceramic piece(s) – from wet clay to bisqueware to glazed and finished sculpture that is yours to keep!

Each session will include demonstrations and hands-on activity covering the following:
• Preparing clay through the wedging process
• Sculpting using coiling, pinching, slab building, and solid construction methods
• Using tools to shape and decorate sculpture
• Subtracting and adding clay at various stages
• Consideration for clay thickness, gravitational balance, and closed forms
• Maintaining moisture levels and executing controlled drying of clay
• Preparing bisqueware for glazing
• Selecting a glaze based on clay type and texture
• Applying glazes using brushing and dipping methods


Session 1 – Introduction to sculpting techniques (demos and hands-on activity). Begin sculpting one or multiple sculptures.
Session 2 – Building on techniques to create a finished sculpture
Session 3 – Glaze preparation, selection, and application

Ceramic Earring Workshop: 1 session/2 hrs

This single-session workshop is for students of all experience levels to learn the art of making ceramic earrings. Students will shape their earring forms, decorate the surfaces with texture including imprints and carvings, and glaze their earrings. Students will also select gold or silver hardware to be attached to their earrings by the instructor after kiln firing is complete. Each student typically creates 4 or 5 pairs of earrings in the 2-hr session.

Cost: $60/per person

Please note: Earrings will not be ready for take-home at the conclusion of this session.  Students may pick up their finished earrings one week after the workshop.
